ROSGVARDIIA aren't like U.S. National Guard units you might be used to. The way they're structured is relatively new (since 2016) and they function as Putin's Praetorian Guard.
So this photo, alleging to be Russian National Guard (ROSGVARDIIA) Special Purpose troopers, or Spetsnaz, contains a few details that I think are worth highlighting.
Similar rifles - customized AK-104s - are visible in footage from Kherson reported to be FSB Alpha Group.
The AK-74 upgrade kit reportedly adopted by the Russian army in 2015 also bears striking resemblances to both rifles.
At a high level it’s interesting that:
The Aimpoint T-2 is an ITAR-controlled product when sold by American retailers (as is the Eotech on the FSB Alpha Group rifle); this may be a Russian-produced copy.
No provision appears to be made for fighting under night vision, although American-style NVG shroud attachments are visible on the helmets; both rifles appear to be equipped with visible lights and, in the case of the one on the right, what may be a visible laser
American tactical products and aftermarket weapons gear are being bought or copied extensively by Russians, to the point that they are nearly indistinguishable from American law enforcement.
Border Patrol tactical unit officers, or BORTAC, for instance, look largely indistinguishable.
This similarity, however, arguably says more about the state of American policing than it does the state of Russia’s military, at the end of the day.
